Crack the Code to Facebook Ad Success - Track Like a Pro

October 15, 202311 min read

Have you ever run Facebook™ ads but had no idea how to track the performance? That’s one reason why people think ads don’t work… because they don’t know how to do that effectively… or at all.

If you're a business owner, you know that Facebook™ ads are an excellent way to get your products or services in front of your target audience. But, it's equally important to track and analyze their performance to ensure you're getting the best results possible.

In this blog post, I'll explain how to do just that, and I promise not to make it too techie and boring!

PART 1: SETTING UP TRACKING

Before we dive into tracking and analyzing, let's just quickly go over the essential tools you'll need to set up tracking:

Facebook™ Pixel: If you're not familiar with the Facebook™ Pixel, think of it as your website's best friend. It's a piece of code that you place on your website to track website visitors and their behavior. This little friend will help you understand how people interact with your website after clicking on your Facebook™ ads.

Custom Conversions: Another essential tool is custom conversions. These are specific actions on your website that you want to track, such as a purchase or a sign-up. You can set these up in Facebook™ Ads Manager to see how many people are taking action on your website after clicking on your ads.

UTM Codes: And finally, we have UTM codes. These are little tracking codes that you add to the end of your URLs to track the source, medium, and campaign name of your ads. You can use UTM codes to track your Facebook ad campaigns in Google Analytics.

PART 2: TRACKING AD PERFORMANCE

Now that you have tracking set up, let's start tracking your ad performance! But, I promise to make it more fun than just staring at numbers. So, let's talk about the metrics you'll want to monitor, and how we can make it a little more exciting:

Reach: Reach refers to the number of people who have seen your ad. Instead of just focusing on the number, let's play a little game. For every new person that sees your ad, do a little happy dance. Trust me; it'll make tracking reach much more enjoyable… plus it’s great exercise once you start getting a ton of views!

Clicks: Clicks refer to the number of times someone has clicked on your ad. Instead of just watching the number go up, let's make it a competition. Choose a team member, make a guess on how many clicks your ad will reach by the end of the day and whoever gets the closest wins a prize!

Click-Through Rate (CTR): CTR refers to the percentage of people who click on your ad after seeing it. Instead of just staring at a the screen willing the percentage to go up, let's make a game of it. Every time someone clicks on your ad, take a shot of espresso. If you're not a coffee drinker, feel free to substitute with your favorite drink!

Cost per Click (CPC): CPC refers to the average cost per click for your ad. Instead of just watching your budget go down… because that is the fastest way for you to get nervous and give up… let's play a game. Set a goal for your CPC, and if you reach it, treat yourself to something you've been wanting, like a new pair of shoes or a fancy dinner.

Conversions: Conversions refer to the number of people who took a specific action on your website after clicking on your ad, such as making a purchase or signing up for your newsletter. Instead of just counting the number, let's make it a little more fun. Choose a team member, guess how many conversions the ad will get in a week and whoever gets the closest wins bragging rights for the week!

Cost per Conversion: Cost per conversion refers to the average cost per conversion for your ad. Instead of just watching your budget, let's make it a little more interesting. Every time you get a conversion, put a dollar in a jar. Once the jar is full, donate it to a charity of your choice, or use it to treat your team to a fun activity.

PART 3: OPTIMIZING UNDERPERFORMING ADS

Now that you're tracking your ad performance and making it fun, let's talk about how to optimize underperforming ads.

Here are a few tips:

Identify underperforming ads: Look for ads with low CTR, high CPC, and low conversion rates.

Pause underperforming ads: If an ad isn't performing well, it's best to pause it to prevent wasting your budget.

Test new ad variations: Create new ad variations with different images, copy, or targeting to see what works best for your audience.

Adjust targeting: If you're not getting the results you want, try adjusting your targeting. You can target different interests, behaviors, or demographics to reach a more relevant audience.

PART 4: ANALYZING AD PERFORMANCE

Now that you've optimized your underperforming ads, it's time to analyze your ad performance to see what's working and what's not.

Here are a few tips:

Compare ad performance: Look at the performance of your ads side-by-side to see which ones are performing the best.

Identify top-performing ads: Identify the ads with the highest CTR, conversions, and the lowest CPC.

Use data to make informed decisions: Use the data you've gathered to make informed decisions about your ad campaigns. If an ad is performing well, consider increasing the budget. If an ad is underperforming, try adjusting the targeting or creating a new ad variation.

And there you have it! You now know how to track and analyze Facebook™ ad performance like a pro… all while having a little fun along the way.
